NNGA Player Spotlight - Andy Vesco
Hole 1: How did you get your start in golf? What is your current handicap and home club?
Mr. Vesco: In my twenties until I was forty-five, I only played a few rounds due to family obgligations. In 1997 with my children gone, my wife said I should start playing again since I enjoyed it. At that time it had been five years since I had last played, so I went to Shopko and got started with a basic set again. I am currently a 7.0 index and a member at Rosewood Lakes.
Hole 2: What is your most memorable golf moment in your golfing career?
Mr. Vesco: My most memorable shot occured in 1999 at the Northern Nevada Amateur at Dayton Valley. Trailing by three on the 18th on Sunday, I eagled for a tie and then won in a playoff.
Hole 3: What are your current practice habits? Have you ever taken lessons?
Mr. Vesco: Practice! What's practice?! I hit balls and putt a few only before a round, usually a tournament. Between a bad back and hands that are always swollen, who wants to practice? Tournaments I'm always ready no matter what.
Hole 4: Do you carry a hybrid (or multiple hybrids) in your bag? Why or why not?
Mr. Vesco: I carry 3 hybride - a three, four and five. They're much easier to hit and the misses are minor compared to swanking a four iron.
Hole 5: How did you find out you had a taste for competitive golf?
Mr. Vesco: I always played sports in high school and basketball in college, so as we get older golf is a way to still find some focus and concentrating without coaches yelling at you.
Hole 6: What is your favorite tournament on the NNGA?
Mr. Vesco: Favorite tournament? Anything at Dayton. I have won three times there.
Hole 7: How many sets of golf clubs do you have at your house? How many of them get put into play?
Mr. Vesco: I only have the one set of clubs. My son takes my old ones any time I get new ones. Like most of us though, I have several drivers and putters.
Hole 8: What is your go to club and when/how has it performed for you in the clutch?
Mr. Vesco: My go to club is my five-hybrid. I can hit it 180 or use it from 140.
Hole 9: What do you want to accomplish in the 2010 season?
Mr. Vesco: 2010 goals: I would like to win again. It's been since 2004 the last time. Putting has been the problem but improved at the end of last year so there's hope.
